  1. DeepMind, Google Cloud give 200 European researchers access to science AI models

Google DeepMind and Google Cloud said they will give up to 200 European scientific researchers direct access to their frontier AI models plus $3 million in compute credits, delivered through the EU's RAISE programme. The models include AlphaFold 3 for predicting the structure of proteins and other molecules, the weather-forecasting model WeatherNext, DNA-focused AlphaGenome, the algorithm-designing agent AlphaEvolve and AlphaEarth Foundations, which maps the planet from satellite data. Google did not say how researchers will be selected, when access will begin, or how the credits will be divided among them.

  2. Roche says AI informs 40% of pipeline decisions, targets 80%

At its late-September Pharma Day investor event, Roche said 40% of pipeline decisions from Q4 2025 to Q2 2026 carried a traceable AI or computational contribution, rising to 44% in Q2 2026, split 41% critical, 48% supportive and 10% informational. Genentech gRED head Aviv Regev presented the target-evaluation agent TargetNexus and a "Lab-in-the-Loop" system aiming to be involved in 80% of research portfolio decisions by Q4 this year. Roche says that with nominally flat resources and lead-identification cycles halved, projects entering lead identification rose 155% and internally generated development candidates rose 50% between 2022 and 2025, and one biologics program reached a clinical candidate in 18 months, with first patient dosed this year. Caveats: Roche has not disclosed how it scores AI contributions, 40% times 41% implies only about 16% of decisions were critically AI-influenced, and the Phase III success rise from 65% in 2025 to above 80% cannot be separated from the stricter "The Bar" framework; no approved drug has yet come from the closed loop.

  3. Shou Zi Chew: AI will rewrite science in three years — ByteDance's bets

Speaking at DBS Bank's first Asia Future Forward Forum in Singapore on 12 October, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew said real scientific breakthroughs in physics, biotechnology, chemistry and materials science will arrive within two to three years thanks to AI, while arguing that humans must stay involved in high-stakes work. The article lays out ByteDance's related moves: in June 2026 it spun out its five-year-old AI-for-Science drug discovery team as Anew Labs, which raised $290 million at a $1.5 billion post-money valuation while ByteDance kept a 56% stake; and its Seed team released Protenix-v2 in April 2026 under Apache 2.0 with open code and weights, which the article says matches or exceeds DeepMind's AlphaFold 3 on several core benchmarks and beats the previous generation's 1,000-seed antibody-antigen results with just five seeds. It also notes ByteDance's September 2026 $29.6 billion three-year bank loan for AI projects outside China, and argues AI4S is now bottlenecked on validation — citing Insilico Medicine's Rentosertib, where AI cut discovery to 18 months but Phase III data are not expected until 2029.

  4. ByteDance AI drug spinout Anew Labs raises $290M angel round

Anew Labs, which spun out of ByteDance in June 2026, raised a $290 million angel round in September 2026 at a reported valuation of about 10 billion yuan, which the report calls China's first AI drug-discovery company to reach that valuation in a first round. Investors include Sequoia China, IDG Capital, Hillhouse Venture Capital, Five Source Capital, Gaorong Ventures, Primavera Venture Partners and Boyu Capital, with Sino Biopharmaceutical and the Shanghai Future Industry Fund joining as strategic investors; ByteDance remains the controlling shareholder and continues to supply Volcano Engine compute. The company has released biological AI models Protenix and PXDesign along with AnewMind, a scientific reasoning model for drug-development decisions, and lists four preclinical pipeline assets, with a lead oral small-molecule candidate it describes as the world's first to target both IL-17A and IL-17F, currently in preclinical lead optimization. Anew Labs said it is focused on R&D and declined an interview.

  5. Biohub partners with NIH, DOE in $1.8B push for AI-powered biology

Biohub, the philanthropic effort of Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, announced a partnership with the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Energy in a $1.8 billion investment to build technologies and scientific infrastructure for "AI-powered biology." Biohub, which launched its Virtual Biology Initiative in April with a $500 million commitment, said Meta, Google DeepMind and DeepMind spin-off Isomorphic Labs have agreed to contribute $300 million. Zuckerberg said AI and other advances mean the goal of curing and preventing all diseases by the end of the century "no longer seems quite so crazy," while Chan Zuckerberg Initiative president Lori Goler said they hope the effort matches the Human Genome Project's impact; the article also notes Anthropic is providing $150 million in AI credits for the government's Genesis Mission.

  6. Musk builds chips, Zuckerberg farms cells as AI races for new means of production

The piece argues the AI race is shifting from hoarding GPUs to controlling two physical inputs: chip fabrication and biological experimental data. Musk's SpaceX and Tesla announced in August a Texas "Terafab" chip manufacturing base with $16.8 billion in first-phase investment, while Zuckerberg-backed Biohub joined an approximately $1.8 billion virtual biology initiative announced on Oct. 7 that aims to turn labs into pipelines that continuously generate training data. It also cites Anthropic's Bay Area wet lab, where Claude proposes experiments, and Danaher's plan to run its first AI autonomous research lab at scale by early 2027.

  7. Dealroom CEO says Europe's first trillion-dollar startup may already exist

Dealroom founder and CEO Yoram Wijngaarde told the Wave by Vento event in Turin that Europe's VC-backed ecosystem could overtake its industrial base in total value within five years, and that the first trillion-dollar VC-backed European company is yet to come — possibly one that is still early stage today. He cited Dealroom data showing European venture investment running at about $89bn a year, 56 VC-backed companies worth more than $10bn and $4.4tn in combined value. The same session cited the State of AI Report 2026, which says four US hyperscalers expect roughly $733bn of capex this year, against the EU's initial €1bn contribution to AI gigafactories within a plan seeking up to €10bn of public money and at least €20bn private.

  8. Isomorphic Labs in talks to raise at $40B–$50B valuation

Isomorphic Labs, the AI drug discovery company spun out of Alphabet's Google DeepMind, is in early talks to raise new funding at a valuation of at least $40 billion, according to Bloomberg. SiliconANGLE, citing the same report, says the valuation range could reach $50 billion, though the size of the round was not disclosed. The company's flagship IsoDDE platform targets drug design tasks such as binding pocket discovery; Isomorphic has claimed it outperforms AlphaFold on some of these tasks, figures that come from the company itself.

  9. Biohub, Meta, Google DeepMind and US agencies pool $1.8B for open AI biology data

Biohub, the nonprofit backed by Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, is coordinating a roughly $1.8 billion effort to build open biology datasets for training AI models that predict cell behavior. Meta, Google DeepMind and Isomorphic Labs are contributing $300 million combined, the US Department of Energy is putting in more than $500 million over five years for measurement, modelling and compute, and the NIH is supplying datasets built with over $500 million in earlier federal funding. Biohub says commercial funders get one year of exclusive access before the data goes public, government-funded work carries no such restriction, and a first dataset is expected in about a year, with accurate predictive models targeted within five years.
