OpenRouter says a Claude 529 overloaded_error indicates that Anthropic’s API temporarily lacks capacity for the requested model, rather than a problem with the user’s key, plan, or request. It recommends retrying with exponential backoff and randomness, then routing the same Claude model to another provider; Anthropic SDKs and Claude Code already perform such retries. OpenRouter’s overload example used a local API stand-in because a real 529 cannot be triggered on demand.
