iOS 27 adds video apps and Siri AI to CarPlay, but only on newer iPhones

TechNews, summarizing an Engadget roundup, reports that Apple's iOS 27 brings several CarPlay updates: support for video apps (usable only while the car is parked, switching to audio-only once driving begins), a persistent mini player with album art, playback controls and a progress bar on the Now Playing screen, new wallpapers, and route-data sharing with the vehicle so navigation apps can compare arrival times and suggest charging stops. The updated Siri AI also reaches CarPlay, answering general knowledge questions and pulling personal context from mail, messages and calendar, but because CarPlay runs entirely through the iPhone, the feature is limited to iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 and later; an iPhone 14 still gets the mini player, progress bar and wallpapers but not the new Siri. The report adds that video support requires automaker implementation, so apps such as YouTube and Netflix may not work in every vehicle, and that Siri AI is not offered in the EU due to local regulations.
