   Google Messages rolls out Enhanced Protection for spam and scams

   Google Messages for Android is rolling out an opt-in Enhanced Protection mode with three features: cloud-based Scam Detection, enhanced link protections and redesigned warnings for links sent by numbers outside the user’s contacts. Scam Detection uses cloud Gemini models with Android Private AI Compute to evaluate message context, while link protections use the on-device Gemini Nano model and real-time web signals to assess unfamiliar links. Google says cloud detection is better at identifying novel and sophisticated attacks than its existing on-device detection. The enhanced link-protection feature is available on Pixel 10+, Samsung Galaxy S26 series, Z Flip 8, Z Fold 8 and other select devices; the report does not establish the availability of the full Enhanced Protection mode across those devices. The option was observed in Google Messages beta version 20261020_00_RC00, with no stable-version rollout timeline given.
