  1. Chinese LLM makers push into AI hardware to grab entry points and revenue

On Oct 13, StepFun chairman Yin Qi unveiled the STEPX Neo agent phone in Shanghai, while Alibaba's Qwen released two AI glasses and an AI headset in Hangzhou the same day, with both events showcasing AI capabilities. Earlier, ByteDance and ZTE's Nubia NaviX Ultra — better known as the "Doubao phone" — went on sale Sept 16 with over 360,000 reservations on JD.com, and Tencent's WorkBuddy open platform launched Sept 2 in Shenzhen with nine co-branded hardware devices spanning glasses, earbuds, recording cards and speakers. A former executive at a leading Chinese LLM company is quoted saying the push is mainly about capturing entry points, since users show little loyalty to models, and that selling devices is another monetization path; listed Zhipu spent 2.131 billion yuan on R&D in the first half, about 2.2x revenue, while MiniMax spent US$297 million, roughly 2.5x revenue, with both loss-making. The report notes no LLM company has disclosed accurate AI hardware sales figures, and hands-on tests found weak real-time translation accuracy and an AI phone that failed to complete a takeout order in several minutes.

  2. Apple's HomeView hub adds temp/humidity sensors, syncs with LG and Schneider thermostats

Apple unveiled HomeView, its first smart-home hub, with built-in temperature and humidity sensors that monitor indoor conditions (Apple says they are optimized for roughly 15–30°C and 30–70% relative humidity) and share readings with new LG Electronics and Schneider Electric thermostats. The device uses iPhone on-device AI for an "Adaptive Temperature" feature that adjusts air conditioning and ventilation based on occupancy and nighttime routines, and it packs an A18 chip, a 7-inch Liquid Retina display and a 12MP camera at $299, plus a wall-mounted option whose accessories reach $129.95. Separately, TMTPost reported that Apple Intelligence with adapted Alibaba Qwen models has been approved for China and will enter testing there in late October with first-generation features (not the newest Siri AI), with a full launch planned for December via iOS 27.3.

  3. Atlassian says it uses no Chinese AI models in production

Atlassian co-founder and CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes said on the 20VC podcast that the company runs no Chinese AI models in its products in production, instead using Nvidia's Nemotron models through what he called a deep partnership, along with models from Mistral and others, picking the best model per task as cheaply as possible. He said there is customer pushback in some places to "Chinese models" but not to open models, and argued that refusing inspectable, cheaper open technology will be hard for enterprises to sustain. He was also sceptical of companies claiming to have built their own AI models, saying most have fine-tuned a Chinese open-weight model for one job, and said AI running costs will fall further than he once thought.

  4. Alibaba Qwen releases QwenGyre, an online RL framework for long-horizon agent tasks

Alibaba's Qwen team released QwenGyre, an online reinforcement learning framework aimed at long-horizon agent tasks, on October 12. According to the company, such tasks can run for hours, involve hundreds of interdependent interactions with the environment and process millions of tokens; QwenGyre splits GPUs into compute units so that units freed when a batch of tasks finishes roll into training while running tasks keep their progress and caches, and it uses Token-in Token-out recording to organize shared-prefix trajectories into a tree, expanding only selected paths as training samples while Partial Scoring salvages feedback from timed-out but partially completed tasks. In the reported NL2RepoBench online RL experiment, with roughly 700,000 tokens per rollout, pass rate rose from 52.5% to 58.5% after 48 training steps, and QwenGyre delivered a 1.78x end-to-end speedup over an Async implementation at the same GPU budget, with cross-task end-to-end speedups on Qwen3.6-122B across NL2RepoBench, DeepSWE and TerminalBench.

  5. China's Golden Week OTA split: Doubao sells answers, Fliggy and Tongcheng sell inventory

A TMTPost retrospective on China's National Day Golden Week says AI entry points became a key battleground for online travel platforms. Doubao launched a dedicated travel hub covering maps, transport, hotels and dining before the holiday, and Douyin Life Services said Doubao hotel bookings rose over 56% month-on-month; Fliggy's Bangbang assistant saw interactions up 158% and guided flight and hotel bookings up 110%, while Tongcheng Travel's DeepTrip agent and Meituan's “Xiaotuan” assistant also reported holiday gains. The piece argues that legacy OTAs stress interaction and traffic while Doubao stresses transaction conversion, and that AI itineraries still struggle to adjust for weather, crowds, fares and traffic, so turning plans into real fulfillment rather than chat quality will decide the winner.
