Apple reportedly shelves plan to replace 5,000 AppleCare staff with AI
According to MacRumors citing Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple had considered cutting roughly 5,000 AppleCare support roles and letting AI agents handle some phone and online support, but the plan is now indefinitely on hold. Apple still uses a generative AI assistant on its US and Canada support lines to answer product questions and offer troubleshooting, with an option to reach a human advisor, and is testing an AI chatbot in an "Ask" tab of the Apple Support app for some users. Reports do not say why the plan was shelved, nor confirm that the jobs will be kept permanently, so the takeaway is a pause on large-scale cuts rather than abandoning AI support.
Why it matters: Customer support is one of the earliest real deployments of generative AI, and Apple's choice suggests big firms still favor a hybrid model over full automation.

MacRumors 於今年 9 月 29 日引述 Bloomberg 記者 Mark Gurman 報導，蘋果認為 AI 電話及線上客服代理可以承擔部分員工工作，因此曾考慮削減約 5,000 個支援職位，但現階段已不再考慮採取相關措施。
The Mac Observer 同日報導，蘋果在夏季研究方案，涉及不少居家工作客服人員。消息所指屬於內部考慮後擱置方案，並非蘋果已公布或執行裁員行動，也不能解讀為公司承諾永久保留所有相關職位。
AI 助理可轉接真人
MacRumors 早在 8 月 26 日報導，美國及加拿大用戶致電 1-800-APL-CARE 時，可能先接通生成式 AI 語音助理。系統可以回答蘋果產品使用疑問，並逐步提供故障排除指引；遇到無法解答的問題，或用戶要求與真人對話時，系統仍可轉接真人顧問。
蘋果也在 Apple Support App 測試 AI 聊天機器人，透過向部分用戶開放「Ask」分頁提供支援。裁員計畫暫停不代表蘋果停止引入 AI，而是公司目前未推進相關大規模削減人力方案。
目前的報導都尚未提及蘋果擱置計畫的具體原因，也未證實此決定是否源於 AI 表現不足、用戶偏好真人客服或員工同理心。因此消息重點是蘋果暫停裁員方案，同時繼續使用 AI 處理部分客服工作，而非全面放棄 AI 客服。
