Waymo expands robotaxis to Canada, targeting Toronto rides in 2028
Waymo said it will bring its autonomous ride service outside the US for the first time, with rides bookable in the Toronto area app in 2028, starting with a limited number of its mainstay Jaguar I-Pace electric SUVs and adding more over time. In the coming days, human-driven Waymo cars will map local street networks and acclimate the autonomous technology to Toronto traffic patterns, with testing in neighborhoods including Liberty Village, St. Lawrence Market and Yorkdale. Waymo says it has built a sixth-generation Waymo Driver system for diverse environments including Toronto's extreme winter weather, and is partnering with Toronto-based Element Fleet Management for vehicle maintenance, validation driving and customer service.
Per the report, this would be Waymo's first autonomous ride service outside the US; it launched its fully autonomous electric ride service in 2018 and currently operates in US cities including Miami, Phoenix and the San Francisco Bay Area.
