Humanoid robot aftermarket: batteries and servicing may absorb up to 60% of lifetime cost
A commentary published by TMTPost (authored by 斯马克开源) cites the English edition of the Embodied Intelligence Development Report (2026), released on Oct 16 by CAICT's AI institute with Tsinghua University's electronics department and an embodied intelligence testing lab, saying global humanoid robot shipments exceeded 22,000 units in the first half, up nearly 300% year on year, while the robot itself accounts for only 40% to 60% of total cost of ownership. The author breaks down aftermarket spending on batteries, maintenance, skill packages and insurance, estimating that frequent charge cycles wear out robot batteries in about two to three years, turning them from assets into consumables akin to printer cartridges, and putting annual comprehensive maintenance for one wheeled-arm or bipedal humanoid at roughly 500,000 to 700,000 yuan. It also cites JD.com's after-sales partnerships with more than 200 robot companies and repair centers in eight regions, Boston Dynamics' subscription-style Spot CARE service, and Faraday Future's $2,490 hardware plus $390 skill-package pricing, along with six humanoid robot national standards approved by the market regulator on Oct 15.
If aftermarket spending really is 40% to 60% of a humanoid robot's lifetime cost, the industry's current focus on shipments, order counts and unit prices may understate the weight of maintenance, consumables and skills businesses.
