Z.ai releases GLM-Legal, claims top open-weight legal model
Z.ai released GLM-Legal, a legal-domain model built on the lightweight GLM-5.3-Flash base, saying it matches frontier closed models on mainstream legal benchmarks for workflows such as contract review, evidence analysis and compliance planning. According to Z.ai and Vals AI, GLM-Legal scored a 19.2% full-pass rate on Harvey LAB, a 12.5 percentage-point gain over its base model, and ranks as the top open-weight model on Harvey's Legal Agent Benchmark and LegalBench. These performance and ranking claims come from the developer and related parties and have not been independently reproduced.
Legal work is one of the faster-adopting domains for specialized agents; if a lightweight open-weight model really matches frontier closed models, the bar for law firms and corporate legal teams to deploy domain AI could drop.
