OpenAI math results spark concern among cryptographers
OpenAI last Tuesday released more than 300 math results that it says an internal model solved, and the release has sparked concern among some of the world's leading cryptographers. They worry that continued AI math advances could yield new algorithms making current encryption — from online payments to messaging platforms like WhatsApp — easier to crack, since modern internet security rests on the assumption that public-key encoding is easy while decoding without the private key is hard. Whitfield Diffie, who helped invent public key cryptography in 1976, said he anticipates "a vast change in mathematics, cryptanalysis included," though he is unsure of the timescale: "A year is probably too soon; five may not be."
If AI genuinely accelerates mathematical breakthroughs, the hardness assumptions underpinning internet security could erode, affecting payments, messaging and digital accounts.
