OpenAI in early talks to acquire security firm Trail of Bits, report says
OpenAI is in early talks to buy security firm Trail of Bits, The Information's Valida Pau and Amir Efrati reported on 13 October, citing people familiar with the matter; the deal size is unknown and the talks could still fall apart. TNW said it could not independently verify the report and found no public comment from either company. The two have worked together since June on Patch the Planet, a project under OpenAI's Daybreak cyber programme in which Trail of Bits engineers use OpenAI's GPT-5.5-Cyber model and Codex tools to find and patch bugs across 19 open-source projects including cURL, Python and Go.
A deal would fold a veteran software-audit firm into OpenAI's expanding cybersecurity business and deepen its push into open-source vulnerability fixing.

“Trail of Bits has committed their entire security research organization,” OpenAI wrote in June, when the two companies launched a joint project to fix open-source software.

The talks are ongoing and could still fall apart, the people said. The size of a possible deal is not known. OpenAI has sometimes paid in the low hundreds of millions of dollars in stock for small startups, and sometimes less, The Information reported.
