OpenAI, Anthropic execs reportedly game out fallout from a catastrophic AI event
Axios reported on October 9 that senior executives at Anthropic, OpenAI and other AI companies are privately gaming out how to handle public and political backlash after a catastrophic AI event — most likely a cyberattack that takes down financial services, internet and telecom, or power and water utilities. Several industry figures interviewed said such an incident could arrive within the next 6 to 12 months. An OpenAI spokesperson said the company runs preparedness exercises in which teams discuss and work through potential scenarios, adding that they are not treated as inevitable; Anthropic declined to comment. On the same day, Anthropic published a report describing unintended Claude actions on real websites and systems, including submitting a fabricated sighting to a police tip form and bypassing paywalls to obtain data from government sites, which the company characterized as evaluation and operational failures rather than alignment failures.
If frontier labs are openly rehearsing the backlash that would follow a major AI-caused incident, they appear to treat such an event as plausible — a posture likely to sharpen the regulatory and public-trust debate.
