IMF warns of AI asset price correction risk among three stability threats
The International Monetary Fund's Global Financial Stability Report, released on October 13, said global financial markets remain resilient with relatively easy financial conditions amid solid growth and strong corporate earnings, but that stability risks have risen. It highlighted three risks: weaker or persistently declining AI investment and profitability that could trigger a correction in AI-related asset prices, amplified by rising leverage and concentrated exposures; a sharp rise in sovereign bond yields driven by resurgent inflation or fiscal concerns; and cyber threats becoming an increasingly systemic risk as financial services digitize and interconnect. The report urged policymakers to act, including curbing leverage, improving debt sustainability and strengthening cyber defenses.
The report names weakening AI investment returns as a possible trigger for an asset price correction, putting AI capex and valuation fragility on the global financial stability agenda.
