Google Sheets canvas turns prompts into interactive mini-apps with Gemini
Google announced Sheets canvas on Aug. 13, 2026, as part of its continued expansion of Gemini in Workspace. Users describe a Kanban board, dashboard or planning tool in natural language, and Gemini generates an interactive read-write interface layered over an existing spreadsheet — dragging cards or changing statuses updates the source cells, and edits to the sheet appear in the canvas, all under the file's existing sharing permissions. Availability covers eligible Google Workspace Business and Enterprise Standard and Plus plans, Google AI Pro/Ultra personal accounts and Google AI Pro for Education, and is currently limited to Google Sheets on the web with the account language set to English and smart features enabled.
It lets teams build tailored interfaces over spreadsheet data without coding, though Google has not detailed behavior for protected ranges, hidden sheets or very large datasets, so pilots should test permissions, formulas and usage limits first.
