Google limits Gemini model choice, gates Argon to Fairwind
Google is tightening control over which Gemini models users can pick. Its flagship Gemini 4 Argon, which replaces the cancelled Gemini 3.5 Pro, is limited to the 650-plus members of the Fairwind program; it has no public API, raises output to 1 million tokens from 64,000, and is priced at an introductory $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens before returning to $4 and $20. Google-reported scores include 77.9% on DeepSWE v1.1, 91.7% on LVBench, 51.3% on Zapier's AutomationBench and 68% on CWE-bench v1, tied with GPT-6 Astra; all figures come from Google's own testing and cannot be independently reproduced. From October 9, non-subscribing personal accounts see only an Auto option in the Gemini app, defaulting to Flash-Lite, while on October 8 Google Cloud launched the enterprise-focused Gemini agent, which gets its own Workspace account and email. In contrast, Google loosened several low-compute features, including Skills, Guided Vision and the open EmbeddingGemma 2 embedding model.
If the strongest Gemini is reserved for enterprise partners, model choice matters less than identity, permissions, memory and the entry point.
