Meta Muse accused of profiling users' friends and contacts
The Verge published a commentary on October 15 criticizing Meta's AI personal assistant Muse for requesting access to bank accounts, passwords, contacts and chat logs, and for drawing in information about users' friends and family. Meta spokesperson Daniel Roberts said Muse builds context from public information and from what users choose to share, such as remembering that the person who sent an invoice is the plumber hired earlier. Critics including Signal Foundation president Meredith Whittaker questioned whether users can make informed choices about others' data, and the report cited Wired saying security researchers who extracted Muse's operating instructions found an internal process that compiles and updates profiles of everyone in a user's life hourly.
Muse has been downloaded millions of times and hit No. 1 on Apple's App Store, so how it handles data about people who never installed it affects a much wider group.
Friends don’t let friends feed their data to AI agents
You may have consented to sharing with Muse, but all your friends sure didn’t.
