China's AI model race grows more crowded as MiHoYo, Xiaomi and Meituan pile in
The Information reports that China's large-language-model race is drawing in companies from other corners of the tech industry. MiHoYo, the Shanghai game maker behind Genshin Impact, is developing its own LLMs with the goal of becoming a top-tier lab in China within a couple of years; smartphone and EV maker Xiaomi released its latest LLM two weeks ago; and Meituan, China's biggest food delivery and local services app, unveiled a more powerful version of the LLM it launched last year in June. The report did not name specific model versions or cite benchmarks.
If gaming, smartphone and delivery giants all build their own models, China's foundation-model competition spreads well beyond dedicated AI labs, intensifying the fight for compute and talent.
