Formosa Smart Energy starts Changhua Phase 2, targeting 7.5GWh for AI data centers
Formosa Smart Energy Tech announced at Taiwan International Smart Energy Week that it is fully launching the second-phase expansion of its Changhua Coastal battery plant, with general manager Liu Hui-chi saying piling is expected to begin in December and mass production targeted for May 2028, when total capacity is projected to exceed 7–7.5GWh aimed at AI data center (AIDC) backup power and smart vehicles. The company also showed a 90V50Ah high-rate battery developed for AIDC backup needs, supporting up to 8C continuous discharge with multi-level BMS monitoring and protection. Liu said Phase 1 cell capacity rose from 2.1GWh to 2.5GWh after a June process improvement, with operations already above 60% of projected revenue, while chairwoman Wang Jui-yu said the firm has completed battery module deployment for a semiconductor company's data center and full construction of a Nanya Technology AIDC facility, and is advancing a US data center battery project.
AI data center power and backup needs are pulling battery and storage suppliers into the AI supply chain, making such capacity moves a signal of how compute growth drives power infrastructure.
