AI Short-Drama Boom Pressures Profits, Hit Rates and IP
TMTPost reports that China’s AI short-drama and animated-drama market is expanding rapidly, with 221,900 new titles reportedly added on Douyin in the first half of 2026. Yet only 0.47% exceeded 100 million views, while production costs have fallen and revenue per title has declined, squeezing producers’ margins and bargaining power. Soy Sauce Culture founder Huang Haonan says lower barriers and abundant supply are weakening his company’s moat and making durable IP harder to build.
The report documents a major shift from labor-intensive production toward compute-intensive AI short-drama creation, with rapid supply growth coinciding with lower hit rates, weaker unit economics and reduced leverage for smaller producers.
