Bosses wish, staff resist: the FDE bottleneck for AI in Chinese enterprises
A 36Kr deep dive examines the awkward position of forward deployed engineers (FDEs) in China — a role pioneered by Palantir and popularized by OpenAI and Anthropic, and now used by Tencent, ByteDance and Alibaba to push AI into enterprises. It describes bosses asking for agents that replace entire IT departments or monitor employee output, while frontline staff resist tools they fear will cost them their jobs. The report also says messy enterprise data and undocumented workflows push FDE projects back into data cleanup, and cites an Accenture survey of 163 Chinese companies in which only 9% reported gains in productivity, revenue or profit from AI.
The account suggests the real bottleneck for enterprise AI is organizational, data and human, rather than model capability.
