Deloitte survey: 52% of UK CFOs expect AI-driven job cuts in a year
Deloitte's survey of chief financial officers, conducted Sept 17 to Oct 1 with 66 CFOs (12 from FTSE 100 and 25 from FTSE 250 firms), found that 52% expect to cut jobs with AI over the next year, while 67% say AI has so far delivered only a quarter of the change they anticipate and only about a third expect it to lift profit margins in that period. The findings are cited as more evidence of UK "jobless growth": AI adoption plus high employment costs are pushing firms to expand without hiring, with long-term unemployment rising and youth unemployment at its highest in more than a decade. UK AI minister Kanishka Narayan promised in a speech that ordinary workers would not be left to bear the cost of the AI shift alone, while training platform Multiverse, founded by Euan Blair, issued a separate report saying companies spend on AI tools without training staff to use them.
If half of large UK firms act on these intentions, AI-driven displacement shifts from forecast to a line item in corporate budgets.
