Chinese creators' AI-made K-drama and J-drama shorts break out; top hit earns millions
Tech Planet reports, in a piece republished by TMTPost, that AI-generated short dramas styled after Korean, Japanese and US series are spreading on Douyin and Xiaohongshu, with single episodes drawing tens of thousands to over a million likes. The Korean-style series "Pretty Malice" (漂亮的恶意) launched its first episode on Douyin on August 28 and, according to producer Li Zhenjie, has reached 180 million views across six episodes and earned several million yuan, mainly through advertising on its account rather than platform revenue sharing. The article also cites industry figures showing about 221,900 new AI short dramas on Douyin in the first half of 2026, only about 1,055 passing 100 million views (roughly 0.47%), and fewer than 1.3% recouping costs by industry estimate.
The report indicates AI short dramas can break out through niche foreign-style genres and account-based advertising, even as the cited hit rate and recoupment figures show most projects do not recover their costs.
