Meta Muse Raises Questions About Internet Traffic Platforms
A report by Dongdu Finance says Meta launched Muse in the United States and Canada on September 8. The personal agent can handle tasks such as comparing prices, placing and paying for orders, booking travel and restaurants, filling out forms, sending emails, arranging schedules and dealing with customer service. The report argues that by bypassing product interfaces, personal agents could weaken platforms’ control over traffic distribution and potentially reduce advertising, commission and bidding-based revenue. It contrasts the relatively open and fragmented US internet ecosystem, where transactions often occur on independent sites, with China’s more closed platform ecosystems that handle traffic and transactions internally.
The report presents Muse as a concrete example of how personal agents could reduce reliance on established traffic platforms and pressure advertising- and commission-based business models. It frames these effects as possibilities rather than measured outcomes.
