AI data-center demand drives up hard disk drive prices
A syndicated feature from Huxiu AI, originally by Crazy Tech Hall, reports that hard disk drive prices have climbed over the past two years as AI data centers and cloud storage demand absorb supply. An advertising production worker said a 16TB HDD that once cost 1,000–2,000 yuan now generally costs 3,000–4,000 yuan, with some brands at 5,000–6,000 yuan, while some 24TB drives sell for 6,000–8,000 yuan. The report cites Western Digital's fiscal 2026 figures showing cloud and enterprise customers at 89% of revenue versus 5% for consumer, with cloud capacity shipped up 27% and consumer capacity up 1% while average selling price per unit of storage capacity rose 12%; Seagate said about 90% of its shipped capacity came from high-capacity cloud and enterprise products and that most data-center nearline HDD supply is arranged through long-term agreements into 2028.
The report shows how AI data-center storage demand can tighten HDD supply and raise consumer prices even when consumer capacity demand grows only 1%.
