   AI agents spawn a wave of Rust clones of paid apps

   A community post on r/ClaudeAI describes a two-week burst of AI-assisted open-source Rust rewrites of commercial software, including BrowseCraft (a browser with its own HTML/CSS rendering engine and ad blocker), PdfCraft, an offline voice-cloning tool called VoiceStudio, and two competing Outlook clones named MailCraft. Citing a project readme, the poster says pure-Rust Word, Excel and PowerPoint clones reach about 90% of core functionality with 501 of 523 Excel formulas, and claims 100+ paid apps have been clean-room reimplemented. The author says he downloaded PdfCraft and used it to repair and edit a damaged 68.5 MB, 2,744-page PDF, which launched in under two seconds. Star counts, feature percentages and project totals are self-reported by the poster and project readmes and were not independently verified; the author also cautions that a brand-new browser engine is likely to have security holes.
