- Utah lets Nolla Health's AI issue acne prescriptions without prior doctor review
Utah has authorized healthcare startup Nolla Health's AI to scan a user's face in the Nolla Derm app, score acne severity and issue a prescription directly. The one-year pilot is limited to Utah residents 18 and older with mild-to-moderate acne, costs $4.99 a month, and lets the AI choose only among eight approved topical creams and gels, referring users to a physician when it cannot confidently pick a treatment. According to The Verge, CNET and others, doctors must approve each AI prescription for the first 100 patients, the next 400 are prescribed by the AI with weekly retrospective physician review, and later stages have physicians audit at least 10% of prescriptions monthly plus every escalation or side-effect case. Nolla Health calls it the first U.S. program to issue initial prescriptions rather than refills, while the Utah Office of AI Policy says taking part in its sandbox does not mean the state has approved or endorsed the product.
