- Zero to Agent: Building a Personal Assistant on OpenClaw
In the closing episode of O'Reilly Radar's "Zero to Agent in 30 Minutes" series, AI engineer Sajal Sharma showed how to build a personal assistant on OpenClaw that tracks tasks and notes and handles scheduled work on its own. The walkthrough recommends starting with a local install while learning the system, then moving to an always-on machine or hosted environment for continuous availability and adding a messaging channel such as Telegram, WhatsApp or Slack to reach the assistant away from your desk. It then covers setting up a workspace for tasks, notes, skills and memory plus guidance files, and adding proactive automations including a Telegram reminder, a morning briefing, recurring checks and webhooks. The series ends with a new show, "The Monday Morning Agent," debuting October 12.
O’Reilly Radar · 🔥 0 - Carbonato botnet hijacks unsecured Docker hosts, deploys AI agent to steal credentials
Singapore's Cyber Security Agency (CSA) issued an advisory warning that the Carbonato botnet is compromising hosts through unprotected Docker remote management interfaces. According to the advisory and research by security firm ThreatDown, the campaign does not exploit a new Docker flaw but instead targets the Docker Remote API exposed over TCP port 2375 without authentication; attackers create privileged containers to take control of the underlying host and maintain remote access via mechanisms such as SSH reverse tunnels. ThreatDown says the intruders then deploy the open-source AI agent framework Hermes Agent, sending tasks remotely over Telegram so a large language model can interpret them, generate commands and run them on the victim host, with the agent specifically instructed to prioritize collecting API keys for AI services and to look for SSH keys, access tokens and database information. CSA recommends keeping Docker remote interfaces off the public internet, using SSH or client-authenticated TLS instead, and isolating affected hosts and rotating potentially exposed credentials before restoring service.

A Verge reviewer installed the open-source Hermes Agent desktop app on an M5 Ultra Mac Studio with 256GB of unified memory and chose the roughly 105GB, 125-billion-parameter Qwen 3.8 Flash Next model to run locally. He used it to build a daily briefing, sort a Steam library of more than 400 games by genre, analyze financial records and make a laptop spec-comparison spreadsheet, and is now trying to script partial automation of laptop benchmark testing. The author says local models are no magic assistant — tasks still break — but the privacy of keeping data on the machine makes him more willing to trust it with sensitive work.
The Verge AI · 🔥 0 - Building a context-aware AI assistant with OpenClaw on AWS AgentCore
An AWS Machine Learning Blog tutorial shows how to run the open-source agentic system OpenClaw on Amazon Bedrock AgentCore runtime and give it continuity with AgentCore memory, using a gardening assistant called Sprout as the example; the whole system ships in a single CloudFormation template that deploys with one command. On each message the agent retrieves long-term memory records from a per-user namespace, ranks explicit preferences ahead of inferred facts, and injects them into the system prompt, degrading gracefully to a memory-free answer if retrieval times out within a 3-second budget or errors. Tasks are routed to different models — Claude Haiku 4.5 for text and Claude Sonnet 4.5 for image diagnosis — with Telegram as the front door. The author estimates roughly $1–2 per month for light personal use versus about $35 per month for an always-on EC2 instance.
