  1. a16z: 'Wallet wars' loom as AI agents seek the power to pay

An a16z newsletter argues that agents such as Instinct, OpenAI's Dots and Meta's Muse are pushing personal assistants into messaging and everyday apps, and that completing tasks — booking a hotel, ordering cleats — requires something intelligence alone cannot supply: permission to pay. It frames a "wallet war" among wallets that already hold consumer credentials, citing Stripe's Link (300M users), Shopify's Shop Pay (250M) and PayPal (400M+), and distinguishes helping an agent pay from letting it transact as the user. The piece walks through payment tokenization, warns that Stripe's own virtual-card route can split a purchase into two transactions that break merchant relationships and card benefits, and points to card-network standards — Visa Intelligent Commerce, Mastercard AgentPay and AMEX ACE — plus scoped agentic tokens as the likely path. It also announces a new nonprofit, Securing America's Infrastructure Foundation (SAIF).

  2. Shopify opens its catalog to any AI agent for shopping and checkout

Shopify announced Tuesday that shoppers can configure their AI agents to browse and purchase products on their behalf, giving more agents access to more than a billion listings in its catalog, which includes items both on and off Shopify storefronts. Customers connect an agent to their account on Shop, Shopify's orders-and-tracking platform, and use one-click Shop Pay to check out inside the conversation, with orders funneled back to the Shop app. Shopify markets the feature as a "personal shopper" that can be given rules such as budget guardrails or fast-shipping-only filters, and buyers must approve each purchase. In September, Shopify announced a partnership letting Meta's Muse agent browse and buy on a person's behalf; now any agent can do so without a partnership integration.

  3. Amazon blocks Meta's Muse agent while Shopify plugs in Shop Pay

Meta launched its AI agent Muse in the US and Canada, and according to an article republished by 36Kr, it topped the US App Store free chart ten days after launch with downloads and daily actives said to exceed ChatGPT at the same stage. The article says Amazon began blocking Muse from shopping on its behalf on September 20, citing unauthorized agent access, failure to identify itself as AI, and risks around stored login credentials; Meta responded that Muse runs in an isolated secure VM, uses Stripe Link one-time card numbers, and is kept separate from its ad systems. Shopify took the opposite approach, exposing product catalog data to Muse and, on September 21, connecting Shop Pay so users can check out inside the chat.
