- Democrats see an AI crackdown as a midterm advantage
With US midterms weeks away, The Verge reports that polls predict Democrats will flip at least one chamber of Congress, putting committee leadership back in their hands and potentially ushering in new scrutiny of AI companies. Top Democrats on key committees have signaled willingness to press the industry on data-center tax credits and recent hacking incidents, and could set agendas, call CEOs to testify and demand internal documents if they take over. Democratic strategist Jesse Lehrich called AI an issue "a hundred percent ready for the taking," while a new super PAC, Tomorrow Together, launched a $4 million ad blitz in battleground House races focused on kids' online safety and data centers. The report also notes AI is not yet a top issue driving voters, and neither party has settled on specific policy lines.
The Verge AI · 🔥 19 - AI-Generated Political Ads Top $137M Ahead of 2026 Midterms
Political campaigns and groups have spent more than $137 million on ads created at least partly with AI tools ahead of the 2026 US midterm elections, per data from the Wesleyan Media Project — up from less than $50,000 in the 2024 cycle. Researchers identified 220 AI-generated political ads across 34 states this year, but say the true figure is likely higher because AI use is hard to detect and only 30 states require AI disclosures for political ads. Just 27% of the identified ads carried a disclaimer, Republican candidates and groups accounted for 81% of the ads and 88% of the spending, and nearly half featured deepfake depictions of real politicians.
