  1. Ex-OpenAI researcher's essay argues neural networks are far less tangled than assumed

Nick Cammarata, now a researcher at the interpretability lab Goodfire, published a long essay titled "Neural Networks Are Already Clean" that rejects the pessimistic view he helped shape years ago: with better tools and AI agents, he argues, most neurons in large models can be given fairly clear functional explanations. He estimates that in Qwen3-32B about 90 percent of neuron poles have one main job, about 7 percent have two related ones and only 2–4 percent remain unexplained. He revisits the classic InceptionV1 "cat face/car front" neuron, arguing it actually detects V-shaped geometry, and proposes "recursive generalization," in which a neuron responding to "iy" extends to "diy" and then to "do it yourself." The essay has not been peer-reviewed or independently replicated, and a technical companion paper has not been released; OpenAI's Roon called it a historic moment, while Google DeepMind's Neel Nanda warned against overhyping it.

  2. vLLM adds push-based KV transfer for disaggregated inference

A vLLM blog post introduces a push-based NIXL connector for prefill-decode disaggregated inference that has the decode instance register its destination blocks in advance and starts the transfer from a background thread, moving post-prefill coordination and setup off the time-to-first-token critical path. In the authors' benchmark using Qwen3-32B on a 1P1D deployment of Amazon EC2 P5en instances connected by AWS EFA, push mode delivered up to 3x better TTFT and up to 30% better time-per-output-token than the default pull-based mode, with results depending on workload and configuration. At 8 QPS and 16k input, TTFT was about 540 ms in push mode versus about 1,744 ms in pull mode. The feature was built and validated on AWS Trainium clusters with EFA and contributed to vLLM as an accelerator-agnostic capability.

  3. DoubtLess: Training-free contrastive decoding cuts CoT length 31%

A new arXiv paper introduces DoubtLess, a training-free decoding method in which a smaller reasoning model steers a larger one toward brevity during chain-of-thought (CoT) generation. The small model reads the large model's CoT so far twice — once prompted to be brief and once to be verbose — and the scaled difference between its two logit vectors is added to the large model's logits at every step. On seven benchmarks spanning competition mathematics, graduate-level science and competitive programming, the authors report a 31% shorter CoT for Qwen3-32B with unchanged accuracy, outperforming five inference-time baselines; they also report 20% fewer thinking tokens per turn in a self-debugging coding agent with unchanged task performance.

  4. AirLLM claims 2.8T-parameter Kimi K3 runs on a single 4GB GPU, adds low-VRAM training

AirLLM is an open-source inference and training library that streams weights one layer at a time, keeping only a single layer resident on the GPU to cut VRAM use sharply. According to its repository, it runs 70B models on a single 4GB card without quantization, distillation or pruning, and reports running Kimi K3 (2.8T) in 3.72GB, Qwen3.8-Flash-Next (125B) in about 5.95GB and DeepSeek-V3 (671B) in roughly 12GB. Recent updates also add small-VRAM training, fine-tuning Qwen3.8-Flash-Next (125B) under 6GB and Qwen3.8-27B at about 2GB. All VRAM and training figures are the project's own reported measurements and have not been independently verified.

  5. vLLM adds bi-directional KV transfer to cut TTFT in multi-turn agent workloads

The vLLM blog describes bi-directional KV cache transfer for prefill-decode (P-D) disaggregated serving: on later turns of a conversation, a decode node can return previously computed KV to the prefill node so shared context is not recomputed. In multi-turn benchmarks on a 1P1D deployment using Amazon EC2 P5en instances with AWS Elastic Fabric Adapter, the feature reduced TTFT by up to 1.6x for Qwen3-32B and up to 3.3x for zai-org/GLM-5-FP8, with results depending on workload and configuration. The capability was originally built and validated on AWS Trainium clusters and contributed to vLLM as an accelerator-agnostic feature.

  6. SparseDecoding: decoding-aware pruning for faster LLM inference

The paper introduces SparseDecoding, a training-free network pruning framework aimed at the decoding stage of LLM inference. It builds calibration matrices from layer-wise activations collected during dense-model autoregressive generation (excluding prefill) so the pruning objective matches decoding activations, and pairs this with an N:M sparse matrix-vector kernel using bitmask indexing and fixed-step traversal. The authors report that on Llama-3.1-8B, Llama-3.3-70B and Qwen3-14B/32B it outperforms fixed-text calibration on long-form generation benchmarks, with up to 1.48x end-to-end wall-clock decoding speedup on A100 GPUs.
