- Google and Voltus announce 1 GW PJM virtual power plant
Google and Voltus announced an agreement to fund a roughly 1-gigawatt virtual power plant on the PJM grid, providing capacity for Google's operations as the company expands its data-center footprint. The Next Web reports that the deal adds 1,070 MW to the 100 MW the companies agreed in June, with Voltus aggregating spare capacity from participating homes and businesses. During grid strain, those sites can reduce consumption through batteries, smart thermostats, industrial-process changes and other flexible equipment, while Google pays for the capacity.
The Next Web · 🔥 0 - AI power demand drives a US nuclear uprate wave
Amid rising electricity demand from AI data centers, Constellation, the largest U.S. nuclear operator, announced plans to uprate 11 existing reactors at six plants, adding nearly 1 GW of capacity at a cost of more than $4.3 billion. The U.S. Department of Energy said on Oct. 5 it would provide a $4.2 billion loan to Vistra for upgrades at three nuclear plants expected to add 433 MW, while Google and Meta have signed long-term power purchase agreements with the plants. The report says the U.S. nuclear fleet totals about 98 GW, with uprates potentially adding 3–8 GW, while PJM expects AI to drive about 30 GW of additional peak demand by 2030.
