  1. Microsoft rebuilds Windows 11 Photos app with native editor, AI object removal

Microsoft published a blog post on October 15 announcing a major rebuild of the built-in Windows 11 Photos app, now rolling out to Windows Insiders with a wider release to all Windows 11 users expected later this year. The redesigned gallery browses local, OneDrive and Apple iCloud photos and videos in one interface and supports natural-language searches such as "sunset on the beach"; the editor is rebuilt on WinUI 3 and Microsoft says it launches about 25% faster than the old version. It adds improved AI object removal by painting or circling an area, a Relight feature with up to three adjustable virtual light sources, and support for editing HDR, HEIC and WebP files, while Microsoft says the viewer opens photos 15% faster on average and HEIC images up to 30% faster. TechSpot reported that the new gallery is a WebView2 web wrapper replacing the previous native WinUI 3 gallery, drawing criticism from power users on Reddit and X.

  2. Microsoft Copilot app now embeds full Word, Excel and PowerPoint editing

Microsoft is reversing its earlier approach of embedding Copilot inside Office, instead bringing full Word, Excel and PowerPoint creation, editing and collaboration directly into the new Copilot app. Users can start from a simple prompt in Copilot Chat or a more complex task in Copilot Cowork, and the document opens alongside the conversation, where AI can rewrite content or add tables and standard Office editing controls remain available. Collaboration features include in-app sharing, comments and real-time co-editing, plus a new Library section that gathers recent Office files, Copilot pages and AI-generated images. Files stay in OneDrive with formatting, comments, sharing permissions and version history preserved, and users can choose a specific model for Office tasks or let Auto mode pick one. According to IT之家's October 13 report, the unified experience is currently available only to Frontier customers in Chat and Cowork.

  3. Microsoft 365 cuts Family/Premium shared storage to 2TB, adds shareable Copilot credits

Microsoft is changing its Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium, and Pro subscriptions: Family and Premium move from 1TB per member (up to 6TB total) to a 2TB shared OneDrive pool, while AI usage credits — including Copilot — become shareable among family members, with the owner able to manage AI access for younger members. New and upgraded subscriptions get shared storage starting October 8, 2026; existing subscribers switch at their first renewal on or after May 2, 2027, with advance notice. Households using more than 2TB must buy extra storage at $10/month per TB, potentially doubling or tripling bills, while the $100-a-month Microsoft 365 Pro plan offers 5TB shared storage and the highest AI limits.
