- Biohub partners with NIH, DOE in $1.8B push for AI-powered biology
Biohub, the philanthropic effort of Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, announced a partnership with the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Energy in a $1.8 billion investment to build technologies and scientific infrastructure for "AI-powered biology." Biohub, which launched its Virtual Biology Initiative in April with a $500 million commitment, said Meta, Google DeepMind and DeepMind spin-off Isomorphic Labs have agreed to contribute $300 million. Zuckerberg said AI and other advances mean the goal of curing and preventing all diseases by the end of the century "no longer seems quite so crazy," while Chan Zuckerberg Initiative president Lori Goler said they hope the effort matches the Human Genome Project's impact; the article also notes Anthropic is providing $150 million in AI credits for the government's Genesis Mission.
The Information · 🔥 0 - CSIS: U.S. federal AI contracts reach $4.1B, over half lack governance clauses
A CSIS review of SAM.gov solicitations and USAspending contract records found that U.S. federal agencies signed 2,255 identifiable AI-related contracts in fiscal years 2019–2025, with cumulative obligated amounts of $4.1 billion; the Department of Defense accounted for about 82.8% of obligations and 63.8% of contracts, and annual obligations reached $1.162 billion in FY2025. Among the 75 AI-related solicitations sampled, 41 (54.7%) contained no confirmed governance clause; where clauses existed they centred on performance measurement — benchmarking appeared in 37% and data rights in 35% — while audit access, red-teaming and incident reporting appeared in just 9%, 5% and 4%, and monitoring and human-oversight clauses each appeared in 5%. On the supply side, 1,250 vendors held contracts, 66.2% of them only one, the top three took 30.4% of net obligations, and Palantir and Scale AI together held under 1% of contracts but about $597 million, roughly 15% of obligations.
虎嗅 AI · 🔥 0 - Anthropic commits $150M to Genesis Mission, opens Claude to 15+ federal agencies
Anthropic said on October 8 that it will commit $150 million over three years to the US government's Genesis Mission, making Claude available to more than 15 federal agencies including NASA, NIH and the National Science Foundation and providing Claude, Claude Code and API credits to several hundred mission research projects. At the same White House "Science: A New Golden Age" summit, five US tech companies pledged a combined $2.4 billion in AI tools and compute credits—Nvidia $1 billion, AMD $500 million, OpenAI $200 million, and Anthropic and Google $150 million each—according to The Next Web, which noted it was unclear how the compute would be reserved for scientists. Anthropic also highlighted work by Johns Hopkins astrophysicist Brice Ménard, who used Claude Science to produce what Anthropic describes as the first complete ultraviolet map of the sky; the report says inpainting predictions averaged about 10% deviation from actual measurements.
