  1. Microsoft Clarifies Broad Voluntary Separation Program

Microsoft launched a broad voluntary separation compensation program and expects no more than 3,000 employees, or 5% or less of eligible staff, to accept, according to IT之家, citing Business Insider. CFO Amy Hood said the program lets interested employees choose how to leave. An anonymous Microsoft executive denied that the company intended to cut 60,000 positions or replace everyone with AI, but did not rule out future layoffs; Microsoft said staffing decisions will depend on business needs and priorities. Unlike an earlier voluntary retirement program, which generally did not backfill departing positions, the new initiative allows Microsoft to recruit replacements for some departing employees.

  2. Microsoft flattens Office, Copilot and Teams teams for agentic AI

Microsoft is restructuring teams led by Charles Lamanna, with Business Insider reporting that some management layers were removed and selected senior employees must spend four days a week in the office. Lamanna, who took over Office and Teams after Ryan Roslansky announced his year-end departure, said changing the teams’ working methods was his priority this year. A Microsoft spokesperson linked the flatter structures to agentic programming, saying some coordination and handoff tasks have become less important.

  3. Former Azure Executive Says Big Tech Earnings Will Test AI Investment Returns

In a Bloomberg “The Close” interview, Sheila Gulati said upcoming earnings from Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon will indicate whether heavy AI and data-center spending is paying off. Gulati, founder and managing director of Total Capital and a former Microsoft Azure executive, described Azure as a central model “orchestrator” for enterprises, offering choices among foundation, small, and internal models. Her remarks emphasized return on investment and productivity gains in Office.

TechCrunch reports that Rohit Patel has left Meta after eight years working on AI there and has launched Ndoc, an AI-native workplace platform. Ndoc combines Stage for presentations and dashboards, Narrative for analysis and citations, and Model for datasets and Python scripts; its documents can also be exported as browser-openable .ndoc.html files. The startup is conducting an enterprise pilot and offering limited alpha access, while Patel says a beta is planned for the coming weeks and a full launch in 2027.

  5. AI Reverse-Engineering Tool Takes Off on GitHub

404 Media reports that “Reverse Engineer Anything” rapidly became viral on GitHub over the weekend, promising to let agents inspect application features and recreate similar implementations. Users have reportedly used Claude Code and similar tools to modify smart TVs by removing bundled software and ads, while other projects have targeted picture frames, baby monitors and abandoned devices. The report also notes that AI-generated or cloned software can contain bugs, reliability problems and security risks.

  6. Developer vibe-codes open-source Word, Excel, PowerPoint clones with Claude

Brandon Thomas, the developer behind ArtCraft — a set of free, open-source replacements for Adobe's creative apps — released WordCraft, GridCraft and DeckCraft on October 13, targeting Word, Excel and PowerPoint respectively. The three apps are written in Rust with help from Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5, are offered under MIT or Apache 2.0 licenses, run natively on Windows, macOS, Linux and BSD, and also work in browsers via WebAssembly from a single Rust codebase without Electron or Tauri. Per the GitHub pages, WordCraft reads and writes .docx along with .odt, .rtf, .html, .md and .txt, and supports styles, tables, track changes, spell/grammar check and mail merge; the developer says GridCraft already implements about 89% of Excel's ribbon and menu commands and roughly 98% of its worksheet functions; DeckCraft opens and saves .pptx and exports to PDF or images. Coverage and Reddit discussion note the apps remain early-stage: some call them "AI slop" and question whether one developer can keep up with fixes and upgrades, while Thomas says he has 15 years of coding experience and argues there is "no reason to save broken software" such as LibreOffice or GIMP.
