  1. Anthropic report: agent work hours hit 6x human, entry-level tech hiring falls

Anthropic published a report on October 16 saying that roughly five years after founding, its revenue per employee is 2–4x that of Meta and Google during their high-growth periods, based on internal financial and headcount records through April 2026 compared, inflation-adjusted, with the two companies' public filings at age five. Entry-level staff fell from 21% of the technical workforce in early 2025 to 14%, and entry-level technical hiring from 27% to 9%, with about a third of ML managers and a fifth of software engineering managers saying AI led them to hire less. The report also says coding agents lifted per-engineer code commits to 5x the level six months earlier (tracking 192 engineers, with no worsening in rollbacks), and that by August 2026 employee-deployed interactive agents logged 6x the work hours of humans, after total agent hours first passed human hours in March. A separate survey of 1,334 staff found most Anthropic employees expect AI could do at least 80% of their work by 2030, versus about 5% of US workers who agreed.

  2. Nothing reportedly prepping two smart glasses, one with ChatGPT and a camera

Leaker Roland Quandt said on Bluesky that Nothing is preparing two very different smart glasses: a camera-free pair with audio playback, calls, access to the phone's voice assistant and photochromic lenses, and a more advanced pair that adds a camera plus ChatGPT, translation and other unspecified features. 9to5Google and other outlets note the camera model resembles the Ray-Ban Meta formula, and that Nothing has been building ChatGPT integration into its earbuds and phones rather than adopting Gemini. Reports say the glasses are expected around 2027, with AI processing handled by the phone and cloud and no AR display.

  3. The AI control gap: who gets to say an AI system is safe?

A SiliconANGLE analysis published October 10 argues there is a "control gap" between what AI can do and what the evidence supports trusting it to do, noting that a good demo does not prove a system will stay within the limits of an intended deployment. Drawing on conversations with Appian CEO Matt Calkins, it calls for qualified independent experts to shape public standards, expert assessors to access and challenge vendors' evidence, and an accountable public authority able to require remediation, restrict or stop high-risk activity. It notes that the September 29 White House accord requires an independent committee of each company's board to provide external assessment and oversight, but creates no public authority with mandatory access, compliance conditions and penalties; it also recounts an All In podcast exchange in which David Sacks said external audits should be done by professional auditors rather than NGOs and Chamath Palihapitiya hinted EY (also Anthropic's auditor) would announce something soon, and cites Qualitate customer data on worries about undocumented "agent sprawl."
