- AI Video Generation Finds a Commercial foothold in Short Dramas
MIT Technology Review China reports that AI short dramas are becoming a leading commercial application of video generation, citing data that 430,000 micro-dramas went online in China during the first eight months of 2026, 13 times the prior full-year total, with AI dramas accounting for more than 90%. ByteDance’s Hongguo Short Drama was described as a leading platform, while its AI-animated-drama service Hongguo Free Comics approached 40 million monthly active users in May. In an interview with Yu Lijun, he said video generation is now usable and commercially established, but must balance quality, efficiency and scalability while avoiding the misuse of generated likenesses or presenting synthetic footage as historical fact.
