The Pragmatic Engineer surveys AI spend and PR output across 27 workplaces

The Pragmatic Engineer interviewed engineering leaders and senior engineers at 27 workplaces about how much they spend on AI tools per engineer and how PR throughput changed before and after that spending. CodeRabbit told the publication that weekly PRs per developer rose about 113% year over year on its platform, while Gitar reported that teams it categorizes as "AI-native" ship 60 or more PRs per developer per week; both figures are vendor-supplied and not independently verified. The article reports that spending caps are common, that there is no connection between company size and AI spend, that some companies spend $1,000 or more per developer per month, and that few companies can answer what the return on that spending is. It also says Meta and NVIDIA encourage developers to use AI heavily while Apple engineers are far more cautious.
