A Muisheng Consulting report argues that forward deployed engineers (FDEs) have become one of tech's most sought-after roles: Indeed data cited put FDE job postings at 5,330 in April 2026, up 729% year over year, while LinkedIn showed a 42x increase in new FDE roles from 2023 to 2025 versus 13x for AI engineers. The report says OpenAI created a deployment company with more than $4 billion in initial investment and gained about 150 FDEs by acquiring AI consultancy Tomoro, while Anthropic formed an enterprise-services joint venture with Blackstone, Goldman Sachs and others using a similar on-site model. In China, Liepin data cited shows an average FDE salary of 408,000 yuan and a supply-demand ratio of 0.28, with ByteDance and other top firms offering up to 1.05 million yuan, and Shanghai plus the industry ministry promoting FDE training programs.
