  1. Google pushes inline links higher in AI Mode and AI Overviews

Google announced on October 15 a set of updates to its AI-powered Search experiences, aimed at making source links easier to find. Inline links will now appear higher up in AI Mode and AI Overviews responses more frequently, and the links at the end of AI answers get a more clickable design with image thumbnails. Carousels for developing topics and Preferred Sources are expanding to more regions and languages after launching earlier this year, with Google saying Preferred Sources usage has grown 7x since then. Google is also testing a dedicated section at the top of AI responses showing the "one or two official places" to complete a task with context on why each link is useful, plus clickable creator and publisher names on video results that lead to their Search profiles. One report says publishers in the News AI pilot now exceed 400, with Axios, CNN and the Financial Times among recent additions.

  2. Celebrity AI deepfakes flood Instagram as platform safeguards fall short

AI-generated photos and videos of celebrities are racking up millions of views on Instagram, including a fake image of actor Mia Goth posted by a verified fan account with more than a million followers that drew nearly 500,000 likes, according to The Verge. Goth's representatives said they had complained to Instagram about that account before, and it was eventually removed for impersonating a public figure; Meta, after being asked about eight accounts flagged by the outlet, said it removed some of them and that it does not permit accounts to use someone's likeness to pose as that person. The report notes that Meta requires labels for realistic AI video and AI-generated voices but exempts still images, while YouTube says its likeness detection program removed more than 95 percent of reported videos in the first half of 2026; with no nationwide US right of publicity law, enforcement happens largely platform by platform.

  3. Google launches Universal Cart across Search and Gemini app in the US

Google launched Universal Cart in the US on October 15, rolling the shopping tool out first in Google Search and the Gemini app after previewing it at Google I/O in May. The cart keeps products from multiple retailers in one place, sends price-drop and restock alerts, surfaces relevant promo codes and uses Google Wallet to weigh saved credit-card perks when suggesting how to pay. Checkout runs on Google's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), letting users pay with Google Pay inside the cart or transfer items to a merchant's own site; Google says the cart runs on the 60 billion product listings in its Shopping Graph, with merchants including Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair and many Shopify stores. The Next Web reported that Google's roadmap names Canada, Australia and the UK for expansion and never mentions the EU, and Google has not said whether the cart will reach the EU.

  4. Why People Hate AI but Still Can’t Get Enough of It

Public sentiment toward AI is worsening even as usage continues to grow, creating a paradox of widespread adoption and rising distrust. The article argues that people may resent the technology companies pushing AI into daily life more than the technology itself, while regulation and open alternatives could still give users influence over its future.
