  1. NetEase LobsterAI report: China office agent DAU up 83.1% in September

NetEase LobsterAI published the September edition of its China Office Agent User Behavior Report, saying daily active users of office agents rose 83.1% month over month in September, faster than the 19.8%, 25.1% and 30.6% it lists for June, July and August; all figures come from the vendor's own report with no independent measurement disclosed. It says nearly 70% of users rely on a single model day to day while heavy users average 2.4 models, that combinations built on the DeepSeek Flash series fill all top five pairing slots, and that DeepSeek V4.1 Flash posted a 97.3% cache hit rate, leaving an effective cost of 4.6% of list price. The report also says Zhipu's GLM Token share jumped about 166.7% month over month on the back of a new model, that Doubao Seedream and Seedance took 57.2% and 54.4% of image and video generation tasks respectively, and that 77% of users assign tasks through WeChat, with single-task Token volume reaching a record 202,000.

  2. PhAI Labs releases DiscoveryRSI research agent and 27B model

PhAI Labs, working with several universities and research institutions, proposed DiscoveryRSI and trained DiscoveryRSI-27B using a hypothesis-credit attribution mechanism, releasing the paper, code and models. The system stores evolving hypotheses and test plans in a research hypothesis tree and is paired with DFM-Bench, which evaluates hypothesis revisions, research paths and whole research episodes. The team reports that DiscoveryRSI's group scored 6.3% in a literature cross-check, the highest of five model groups, while the Claude Opus 5 group scored 2.3% and ranked last; it cautions that group sample sizes differ and the comparison is descriptive, so it does not prove the hypotheses were adopted or validated by later research.

  3. PromptArmor: open-weight models 88% more vulnerable to prompt injection

PromptArmor Research says it ran 9,800 trials of indirect prompt injection attacks against agents built on leading open-weight and proprietary models, finding open-weight models 88% more susceptible overall: 26.7% versus 14.2%. In sample attack chains, 49% of open-weight cases ran malicious code after an agent visited an attacker website versus 9% for proprietary models, and 36% rendered a phishing login overlay versus 5%. The study also reports that newer cost-effective proprietary models were more exposed than their flagships (Claude Haiku 5.5 at +38 percentage points over Claude Fable 5.1, GPT-6 Luna at +21 over GPT-6 Astra), while Qwen and DeepSeek cost-effective models were less exposed than their flagships.

  5. Jensen Huang: Chinese open models like Kimi are 'good enough,' backs open source

Speaking at a forum hosted by DBS Bank, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang said Chinese AI models including DeepSeek, Kimi and GLM are "already good enough." He described himself as a firm supporter of open source, calling it the best way to drive efficiency gains, and said the market will decide which models best fit different use cases. Huang also rejected the framing of AI competition as "a race with a finish line," saying both the US and China will be long-term players, and argued that cheaper, more open models will let more people and companies benefit from AI, increasing demand for NVIDIA chips, data centers and compute. The report says he argued the market first misread DeepSeek's impact and that Wall Street is now misreading Kimi's, and that quantum computing could reach mainstream adoption within three to five years.

  6. Broadcom CEO Hock Tan likens AI investors to casino gamblers

Broadcom CEO Hock Tan said many AI investors "have no clue what they are investing in" and set extreme expectations only to find it is "almost like they are in a casino," speaking Monday at the DBS Asia Future Forward Conference in Singapore on a panel with Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan, moderated by DBS CEO Tan Su Shan. He said many enterprises are "just wasting money, spending tokens" like a child spending $10 in ten minutes at an arcade, and described OpenAI's $50bn annualised revenue in September as "by itself, not that bad" for a startup that is still losing money because of heavy training spend. Both CEOs said capital could become a bigger constraint on AI than chips, memory or power; Tan said compute demand should outstrip supply through 2029, possibly into 2030, with wafer shortages easing by 2028 or 2029, and Broadcom is raising $60bn in debt to help Anthropic and other customers pay for AI chips and infrastructure.

  7. Intel, Broadcom CEOs warn capital could become AI's biggest bottleneck

Speaking at a panel organized by DBS Bank, Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan and Broadcom CEO Hock Tan warned that access to capital could become the biggest constraint on the AI boom. Broadcom's Tan said the company is working through wafer and memory chip shortages but that capital will be the main limiting factor, and he likened some AI investors to casino gamblers who have little understanding of what they are betting on. Intel's Tan said Chinese frontier models such as DeepSeek, Kimi and GLM are already good enough, with low token costs and fast adoption, voiced strong support for open source, and said quantum computing could go mainstream within three to five years.

  8. AI infra spending boom meets idle GPUs at Beijing salon

A closed-door salon on AI infrastructure hosted by Touzhongwang with Zhongguancun partners, republished by 36Kr, examined the gap between huge AI infrastructure spending and weak efficiency. It cites ByteDance's $29.6 billion syndicated loan, Alibaba's HK$80 billion placement, more than $80 billion raised earlier by Google and Amazon, and NVIDIA's $500 billion plan, while noting China's daily token calls topped 140 trillion in March, over a thousand times early-2024 levels. Participants cited a Carnegie Mellon test of 756 GPUs running 31 days with the cluster waiting nearly 20% of the time, claimed over half of OpenAI's inference energy goes to idle work, and said average GPU utilization at Chinese smart-computing centers is below 30%. Several investors called lowering token cost and raising utilization the new deciding factor; SGLang's RadixArk reportedly raised a $100 million seed at a $400 million valuation, while one dissenting view argued inference revenue will fall sharply as algorithms compress token use by orders of magnitude.

  11. Ecosia drops Mistral for Chinese open-source AI models

Berlin-based search engine Ecosia, which is used by government services, is ending its work with France's Mistral and moving mainly to open-source models, including Chinese ones. Founder and CEO Christian Kroll told Politico: "We are disappointed with the quality of Mistral," saying the model now trails competitors by a full year. Reports note Ecosia had only switched from OpenAI to Mistral in May, while a Chinese-language headline claims the move to Chinese open-source models halves costs.

  12. Reflection launches Beam, Mistral debuts Large 4 as Western open models push back

Reflection, the US startup billed as an "American DeepSeek", released its first open-weight model Beam: a 501B-parameter MoE with 23B activated per token for coding, reasoning and agent workloads, whose final RL run used more than 10,500 Nvidia GB300 GPUs and over 100 million rollouts. A day later Mistral launched Mistral Large 4, its largest model yet at 1.05T parameters (52B active), 1M-token context and native multimodality, trained from scratch on about 3,800 Grace Blackwell GPUs in Europe; it is in API preview with full weights due in late October. Both companies concede Chinese open models remain ahead: Beam trails GLM-5.3, Kimi K3 and DeepSeek V4.1 Flash on DeepSWE v1.1 (44.4), Terminal Bench v2.1 (80.1) and HLE (36.2), so Reflection is pitching intelligence per unit of inference compute instead.

  13. Why isn't the industry freaking out about DeepSeek 4.1 Flash?

A developer blogger says a month of heavy use of DeepSeek 4.1 Flash left him unable to tell it apart from frontier models such as Claude Opus 5.5 in everyday coding, at a fraction of the cost; he sometimes uses Opus for a final code review and has DeepSeek apply the fixes. He also credits a roughly 437x smaller KV cache versus DeepSeek V1 for keeping all-day sessions under a dollar, and dismisses the dispute over Chinese labs allegedly distilling Claude's training data as irrelevant to developers chasing value.
