  1. Fitbit Air and Edge add insulin resistance and blood pressure trends

Google has added insulin resistance and blood pressure trend features to the Fitbit Air and Fitbit Edge, expanding the devices beyond basic fitness and sleep tracking, according to ZDNET. The features are part of Google's "Health Guardian" suite for Pixel Watch and Fitbit and are available only to Google Health Premium subscribers, a $100 annual subscription that includes an AI health coach and advanced sleep tracking. Users who wear the device for at least five days will receive monthly insights in the app's Health tab. The insulin resistance feature uses a multimodal model to analyze biometric and metabolic patterns, including heart rate, activity and sleep, rather than directly measuring insulin or glucose. Google trained the model on data from other wearables and compiled demographic data, according to a paper in Nature.

  2. Google invests in Flo Health to bring period tracking to wearables

Google announced a multi-year partnership with and an investment in Flo Health, the menstrual-cycle tracking app that says it has more than 80 million monthly users; the investment amount was not disclosed. Starting in early 2027, Flo's cycle insights will connect to Google's health platform and combine with wearable measurements including sleep stages, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, skin temperature and respiratory rate, while the companies also plan women-specific products and research into perimenopause, pregnancy and postpartum recovery. Google says data sharing requires explicit permission given separately for each data type and purpose and can be withdrawn at any time, that Flo data will never be used for advertising or sold, and that Google Health Coach algorithms are designed not to log or store sensitive women's health events. The announcement comes after a consolidated class action over period-tracking data allegedly shared with Google and Meta between 2016 and 2019, in which Google and Flo settled for a combined $56 million while Meta did not settle and was found liable under California privacy law.

  3. Google launches $180 Fitbit Edge with AI health coaching

Google announced the Fitbit Edge on October 12, a $179.99 fitness tracker positioned between the screenless Fitbit Air and the Pixel Watch 5; it is on pre-order now and ships October 27, with a Stephen Curry special edition at $219.99. Google says the 11.5mm tracker has its largest and brightest tracker display, 46% more viewing area than earlier Fitbits, and includes built-in GPS, an ECG and a skin temperature sensor; it calls the Edge its first fitness tracker with a replaceable battery, and claims up to seven days of battery life, though ZDNET notes that falls to about two days with the always-on display enabled. Buyers get three months of Google Health Premium, which unlocks an AI health coach before requiring a paid plan, and later this month Premium users will get Health Guardian for blood pressure trends and insulin resistance, which Google says is for general wellness rather than diagnosis.
