   Analysis: WeChat's Xiaowei agent shifts AI from chat to task execution

   Huxiu's "Xiutai" column traced WeChat's AI evolution: since late June, some users have found a beta entry for an assistant called Xiaowei at the top-left of WeChat's home screen, summoned by swiping right without installing another app. The piece says Xiaowei can send messages, change some settings and invoke mini-programs on command, with 16 entry points including official accounts, Moments, chat images and scan by mid-August; unlike the conversation-focused Yuanbao, it tries to complete tasks inside WeChat and mainly uses WeChat's own WeLM model. It also recounts a September 15 controversy in which a blogger said Xiaowei could read deleted chats and could not be switched off, which WeChat staff said are read locally and discarded, and notes Xiaowei still stops at the payment page and before publishing to Moments for manual confirmation.
