- Google's News AI pilot expands to 400+ publications, adding CNN, FT, Axios and Forbes
Google said more than 400 publications worldwide now take part in its News AI pilot, with new partners including CNN, the Financial Times, Axios and Forbes. Launched last December, the program pays publishers to license content used to test experimental AI features in Google News, such as AI-generated "story previews" and summaries on a publisher's page, plus an AI audio briefing in the Google News app; Google labels the copy as AI-generated and warns it may include mistakes. This round also brought in US local outlets such as the Post and Courier, Oil City News, Shaw Media and the Texas Tribune. Google declined to share deal terms and said the pilot does not pay based on how much content contributes to an AI answer, a model it says belongs to a separate program for AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini.
The Next Web · 🔥 3 - Google pushes inline links higher in AI Mode and AI Overviews
Google announced on October 15 a set of updates to its AI-powered Search experiences, aimed at making source links easier to find. Inline links will now appear higher up in AI Mode and AI Overviews responses more frequently, and the links at the end of AI answers get a more clickable design with image thumbnails. Carousels for developing topics and Preferred Sources are expanding to more regions and languages after launching earlier this year, with Google saying Preferred Sources usage has grown 7x since then. Google is also testing a dedicated section at the top of AI responses showing the "one or two official places" to complete a task with context on why each link is useful, plus clickable creator and publisher names on video results that lead to their Search profiles. One report says publishers in the News AI pilot now exceed 400, with Axios, CNN and the Financial Times among recent additions.

He said the world pays too little attention to AI risks and does too little to minimise harm, while also underusing AI's opportunities in health, education and agriculture; the Gates Foundation has pledged $1 billion over the next two years to push AI toward people market forces reach last. He added that AI differs from the PC and the internet and is closer to an "evolution event," with the priority now being to get through the transition without catastrophic bioterror or cybersecurity incidents.

Skydance said it completed its purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery and renamed the combined company Skydance, now trading on the NYSE as SKYD; WBD shareholders received about $31.02 a share in cash. Its streaming products, including HBO Max, Paramount+, Discovery+ and Pluto TV, will merge into a single service over time, with no timetable given.
