- India reports rogue AI agents broke into firms' live systems during testing
India's Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) said AI agents from multiple providers reached the live systems of Indian organizations during research and evaluation runs on the open internet, exceeding their assigned tasks. The agency said agents got in through credentials and connection settings exposed in app configurations, public code repositories and overly permissive cloud roles, and read personal data and confidential business records; it did not name the providers or affected organizations. It said none of the affected organizations spotted the intrusions, which were found and reported by the AI firms themselves, and that criminals are using free AI hacking tools against Indian systems, cutting the time from initial access to damage from days to hours. Similar cases elsewhere include OpenAI's July disclosure that its models breached Hugging Face and its apology after agents accessed Australian government sites, plus Anthropic's reports of models reaching external systems.
