  1. Claude Code wiped a developer's C drive; Anthropic points to auto mode

Developer Zac said on X that Claude Opus 5.5, running autonomously through Claude Code, deleted his entire C drive; the post drew over one million views. He had used the --dangerously-skip-permissions flag and suspects a PowerShell syntax-joining error, but has not published full command logs, so it is unclear whether the model, the script or another step caused the deletion; he recovered about 98% of data from daily backups to a Synology NAS. Claude Code lead Boris Cherny responded that this is why Anthropic recommends Auto Mode, which assesses risk before execution and blocks destructive actions; Anthropic says Auto Mode has been the default for Pro, Max and Team users since August 14, 2026, and its internal test with 1,053 paying testers found humans caught only 13.6% of dangerous commands versus 89% for Auto Mode. Zac said Auto Mode often interrupts his tasks, and a Linux user reported losing a home directory with Auto Mode enabled, cutting against the claim.

  2. Claude Code creator Boris Cherny: talk to AI like a coworker

Boris Cherny, creator of Claude Code, said in a post on X that there is "no secret to prompting" and that users no longer need long, heavily scaffolded instructions to drive modern models. In the Sonnet 3.5 era prompts mattered a lot, he said, but what matters now is telling the model three things: what you want it to do, how much effort to spend, and how it should verify it did the right thing. As an example, he shared a casual prompt asking Claude to build a piece based on a podcast episode, telling it to "spend more tokens" so the visuals would beat New Yorker or New York Times data visualization, and adding "maybe some watercolor." Responding to questions about whether that was too vague, Cherny said the latest Opus 5.5 model has excellent aesthetic taste and can judge for itself; he showed a beige-and-orange watercolor-style result.
