   GitHub Copilot for Beginners: Teaching the App Your Codebase Conventions

   A GitHub Blog beginner tutorial explains how to give the GitHub Copilot app context about a project's own conventions and workflows. It describes four customization paths: custom instructions in .github/copilot-instructions.md plus path-specific files under .github/instructions that use an applyTo field; Agent Skills stored as folders such as .github/skills/quality-checks containing a SKILL.md and optional scripts; custom agents under .github/agents that define purpose, instructions, tools and project context for larger multi-file tasks; and MCP servers that connect Copilot to outside tools and data, for instance a Playwright server that lets it open and interact with an app in a browser. The post suggests starting with one convention you keep re-explaining and points to the community Awesome Copilot collection for ready-made instructions, skills and agents to adapt.
