  1. Explainer: What world models are, and how they differ from LLMs

An explainer republished by 36Kr from the WeChat account Xianzao Ketang walks through the surging concept of “world models”: rather than replicating a full digital world, they aim to give AI an internal, runnable simulator of physical reality that internalizes gravity, collisions, occlusion and causality as底层 capabilities—here rendered in English as core abilities. The article argues that today's large language models rely on statistical patterns and “memorize answers,” knowing facts but not the world, while world models emphasize common-sense reasoning, forecasting and cross-domain transfer. It cites embodied AI and autonomous driving as early uses—generating rare edge cases and letting robots trial actions in a “dream”—while flagging extremely high training costs, weak handling of complex social interactions and a long road to large-scale commercialization. The funding and acquisition figures it cites (AMI Labs' seed round, AMD's purchase of World Labs, Tian Keyu's new startup) come only from that article and were not independently verified here.

  2. LeCun: AI's next leap will come from world models, controllable by engineering

Yann LeCun, Turing Award winner and founder-chairman of AMI Labs, said at an industrial AI discussion in Seoul that AI's next breakthrough will come from "world models" that can understand, predict and act on the physical world, rather than from simply scaling up large language models. He argued that today's LLMs learn effectively from text, images and video but still lack a reliable grasp of cause and effect in the physical world, noting robots still struggle with everyday chores that a 10-year-old can do untrained. LeCun said his AMI Labs is pursuing this route through Joint-Embedding Predictive Architecture (JEPA), though he acknowledged it remains unproven whether such systems can deliver reliable prediction, autonomous planning and large-scale deployment in complex real environments. Responding to recent cybersecurity incidents involving AI agents, including AI-related attacks on South Korea's financial sector, he said the problems stem mainly from firms lacking security expertise and from flaws in sandboxes, and that the risks can be managed through better system architecture and security engineering.

  3. LeCun: Next AI breakthrough lies in world models, not LLMs

Yann LeCun, founder and chairman of AMI Labs and a Turing Award winner, said in Seoul on Monday that AI's next breakthrough will not come from large language models but from systems that can understand and predict the physical world — so-called world models, according to South Korean outlet The Korea Herald. He said LLMs built for everyday scenarios are limited in understanding the real world: there are no robots that can complete tasks without any training and no Level 5 autonomous cars, while any teenager can learn to drive in a few hours. Arguing that machines find it easy to read language but hard to understand reality, he advocated building systems that learn the physical rules and causal relationships of the real world, predict the outcomes of actions and interact with their surroundings.
