Claude brings direct editing to Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides

AI summary

Anthropic is rolling out the Claude for Google Workspace add-on in public beta, bringing Claude into sidebars in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Users can revise documents, create formulas and tables, build slides, and preview changes before applying them; separate connectors also let Claude edit Google files from a Claude conversation.

Why it matters: The integration gives teams using Claude an alternative to Gemini for AI-assisted work across Google Workspace.

Image 5 If Gemini isn’t quite your cup of tea, Anthropic’s Claude now supports sidebar integration with Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

You can already use Gemini natively in Google Workspace apps, but those invested in Claude can now use their AI of choice inside of Google’s ecosystem through the Claude for Google Workspace add-on which is in public beta starting today. A sidebar opens up alongside your file in Docs, Sheets, or Slides and can assist in building out documents, making edits, and more.

In Google Docs, Anthropic says you can use Claude integration to fix spelling, rewrite portions of a document, or restyle sections, all without breaking existing formatting. In Sheets, you can have Claude write formulas or build tables using the context of the document, or even upload extra documents/spreadsheets to build something new in Sheets. In Slides, Claude can build new slides using existing layouts or themes or flag elements that might need to be updated. Gemini can do much of this but, as mentioned, this is useful for those already invested in Claude.

There’s an “ask before edits” mode where Claude will let you preview changes before they’re made.
