Claude vs Gemini in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides: a Workspace comparison
Anthropic has brought Claude into Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, with Claude for Google Workspace entering public beta on Oct. 6 for paid Claude plans; Claude opens in a sidebar, reads the open file and edits in place. TechRepublic's comparison says Gemini pulls ahead on cross-app context and on generating fully editable presentations from a prompt, while Claude's "ask before edits" approval controls and its use of Python for spreadsheet transformations give it an edge on controlled rewrites and model building. Anthropic's documentation lists beta limitations: Claude cannot read or resolve Docs comments, access Connected Sheets tabs backed by BigQuery, or refresh linked charts in Slides, and the sidebar must stay open while a task runs.
Why it matters: For teams whose work already lives in Google Workspace, the choice of assistant now hinges less on raw model skill than on cross-app context, edit control and native integration.

Google Workspace users no longer have to leave Docs, Sheets, or Slides to choose Claude over Gemini. Anthropic has brought Claude directly into Google’s productivity apps, turning what used to be a platform choice into an in-app comparison.
Claude for Google Workspace entered public beta on Oct. 6 for paid Claude plans, giving users a new way to draft, edit, analyze, and build content without leaving Docs, Sheets, or Slides. Gemini is already built into eligible Google Workspace and Google AI plans and can draw on information across more Google apps. The choice now comes down to how each assistant works inside Workspace, what it can change, and how much context it can use.

Claude vs Gemini in Google Workspace: Quick comparison
Anthropic’s new add-on opens Claude in a sidebar inside Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Claude can read the open file, see selected text, cells, or slides, and make changes directly in place. Anthropic also launched separate Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides connectors that let Claude create and edit Google files from the Claude interface.
| Area | Claude | Gemini | Edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Docs | Drafts, rewrites, restructures, and edits the open document | Drafts and edits with access to broader Workspace sources | Gemini |
| Sheets | Builds models, fixes formulas, creates pivot tables and native charts, and uses Python for data transformations | Creates formulas, pivots, charts, formatting, filters and multi-step sheet actions | Depends on task |
| Slides | Creates, rewrites and restyles slides | Generates fully editable presentations using prompts and reference files | Gemini |
| Cross-app context | Open file plus enabled Claude connectors | Native Workspace sources across Google apps | Gemini |
| Edit control | “Ask before edits” or “Accept all edits” | Suggestions and generated actions users can review | Claude |
| Availability | Public beta on paid Claude plans | Eligible Workspace and Google AI plans | Gemini |
Anthropic’s documentation also lists several beta limitations. Claude cannot read or resolve Docs comments, access Connected Sheets tabs backed by BigQuery, or refresh linked charts in Slides. The sidebar must also remain open while Claude is completing a task.
How we compared Claude and Gemini
We looked at what Claude and Gemini can currently do inside Docs, Sheets, and Slides, including how they edit files, what information they can pull in, where each has limitations, and which tasks they handle best.
Claude can draft, rewrite, and restructure long documents in place. Its default “Ask before edits” mode lets users approve changes before Claude makes them, while ‘Accept all edits’ allows ordinary content changes without repeated approval. Certain sensitive actions, including adding links or external images, still require approval. The platform can also turn notes into tables, shorten documents and work across document tabs.
Gemini reaches further into the rest of Workspace. Googlesays Gemini in Docs can create drafts using information from Drive, Chat, Gmail and the web, reference specific files and match the writing style, layout and structure of an existing document. Users can also choose which sources Gemini should use for a task.
Best for Docs: Gemini. Claude is useful for focused rewriting and controlled edits, but Gemini has the stronger advantage when the job depends on information stored across Workspace.
Claude vs Gemini in Google Sheets
Sheets is the closest comparison. Claude can build spreadsheet models, write and repair formulas, clean data, create charts, normalize values, and explain how calculations work. Anthropic even lists building a three-statement model as an example task.
VentureBeat reported that Claude can use Python behind the scenes for tasks such as cleaning or joining spreadsheet data before writing the results back into Sheets. That could make Claude useful for users working with more complex data transformations.
Gemini supports a broad range of native Sheets actions. Google says it can create tables and formulas, generate analysis, build charts and graphs, create pivot tables, apply conditional formatting, add dropdowns and checkboxes, manage filters, format tables, and solve optimization tasks. It can also summarize information from Drive and Gmail.
Sheets recommendation: Choose by task. Claude supports model-building, formula troubleshooting, and Python-based data transformations, while Gemini supports a broad range of spreadsheet actions. The documented features alone do not establish an overall winner.
Claude vs Gemini in Google Slides
Claude can draft new slides, rewrite titles, split crowded slides, and restyle an existing deck. It can also create charts, although its current beta limitations mean new charts are inserted as images rather than linked Sheets charts.
Gemini can generate a complete, fully editable presentation from a prompt. According to Google, users can provide reference files, refine what they want before generation, and continue editing the presentation after the deck is built.
Best for Slides: Gemini. Claude can handle useful presentation cleanup and generation work, but Gemini offers the more complete native workflow for creating editable decks from Workspace content.
Claude vs Gemini: Which is better for Google Workspace?
Gemini is the stronger default for people whose work already lives across Google Workspace. Google has expanded Gemini into a cross-app assistant that can gather context from relevant files, emails, and chat threads and use it to create formatted Docs, structured Sheets, or stylized Slides without requiring users to manually move the information between apps.
Claude makes more sense for people who already use Claude heavily and want its models, connectors, and Skills available without leaving a Google file. Its approval controls are also useful when users want to decide exactly when the AI changes a document, spreadsheet, or deck.
For teams whose work is spread acrossGoogle Workspace, Gemini is a reasonable starting point because of its native integration. Claude is worth evaluating for teams already using its models, connectors, and Skills, although itsWorkspace add-on remains in beta. Before choosing, confirm feature access and administrator permissions, then compare both assistants on the same task for accuracy, formatting, and review time.”
